Introducing the LCSC Corner

LCSC Corner

I was honored when Matt invited me to share resources and insights for neurodivergent individuals, their families, and their supporters. As the director of the Landmark College Success Center in San Mateo, California, I regularly speak with families, educators, and advocates who have questions about neurodiversity—its challenges, strengths, and the best ways to provide meaningful support.

This LCSC Corner will serve as a space to share valuable strategies, tools, and resources to help navigate the journey of neurodivergence. For this first entry, I’d like to start by providing some background on Landmark College and the Success Center—two places dedicated to empowering neurodivergent individuals through education and personalized support.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Landmark College (LC), a college dedicated to meeting the needs of neurodiverse students. Located in Putney, Vermont, LC offers 2-year and 4-year degree programs, transition support services, summer skill-building opportunities, and an array of online learning options. What sets LC apart is its focus on embedding support directly into the educational experience—a model that integrates academic learning with skill development tailored for students who learn differently.

In addition to its academic programs, LC has been a leader in research and development focused on neurodiversity. This dual mission of education and innovation has shaped the College’s approach to supporting students and their families.

Expanding Support Beyond Campus: The Landmark College Success Center

Recognizing the growing need for individualized support beyond its Vermont campus, LC launched the Landmark College Success Center on the West Coast in August 2021. Drawing on LC’s decades of expertise, the Success Center provides personalized coaching for neurodiverse teens, young adults, and adults. Its services focus on building executive function skills, offering academic support for college-level reading and writing, and preparing individuals for transitions to and through college. Social skill development is another key area of focus, helping clients navigate the interpersonal challenges that often accompany neurodivergence. The Success Center reflects a broader effort to make LC’s unique approach more accessible to students and families who may not be able to attend the college itself.

Resources for Families: The Landmark College Family Resource Hub

One question that often arises from families and caregivers of neurodivergent individuals is how they can better understand neurodiversity and support their loved ones. In response, LC developed the Landmark College Family Resource Hub —an online platform designed to provide easily digestible, practical information for families, friends, advocates, and supporters.

The Resource Hub was created by Dr. Michelle Deal of LC’s Training, Research, and Development department and features free micro-learning modules that take just 15–20 minutes to complete. Topics range from understanding the strengths of neurodivergent individuals to exploring postsecondary education options and tools for accessibility. The platform is designed for flexibility, accessible on phones, tablets, or computers, and is continually expanding, with new content scheduled for release this year.

A Commitment to Supporting Neurodivergent Communities

Landmark College’s mission has always extended beyond its students to include the families, caregivers, and advocates who play such a critical role in their success. Whether through academic programs, coaching services, or resources like the Family Resource Hub, LC continues to build pathways that empower neurodivergent individuals to thrive.
